The SMNW Unified Sports team had four groups of student athletes compete in the Special Olympics Bocce Tournament held at SMNW on Saturday, and all contestants, and volunteers displayed they are “EVERYDAY CHAMPIONS.”
SMNW had four groups, all earning medals (two teams earned silver and two teams earned bronze) with a full house of numerous community members looking on and cheering. Schools from various locations, Blue Valley North, Blue Valley Southwest, Lawrence, Olathe South, Olathe East, Topeka Seaman, SMNW just to same some, were representative of the round-robin competition.
The hardware, was well earned by all contestants, yet it was the commarodry and the sportsmanship that stood out. The integrity of interscholastic athletics was put on the spotlight. Some of that spotlight has to be shared with the 40 plus volunteer student athletes, from softball, baseball and girls soccer (gave their time and energy) in helping to set up tear down, officiate competitions and be there to offer general support. These volunteer student athletes, along with their coaches, were true ambassadors with genuine care and support for the athletes from all school.
Pending the future SMNW is planning to be a fixture to help support the efforts of the Kansas Unified Sports Special Olympics and are hopeful to be hosts for future events in the area of bocce and/or soccer.
