Junior Varsity Dance, Varsity Dance · Dance Team Update!

It has been awhile since we have posted, so we thought we would update everyone on all the awesome things we have been able to accomplish in the past semester!

After a HOT tryout in July, our teams started their work right away with a virtual band camp! We were able to complete workouts, technique, and even learn some choreography from home.  It was a lot of trial and error, but we did it!

We began the school year not knowing when (or if) fall sports would happen, but luckily we had our first football game (and senior night) on September 25th.  It was so fun to be back in the stadium and it was a beautiful night to honor our seniors and their families.  A big thank you to all the efforts of Rylie, L’leana, Ella, Hadley, and Lilly (and their families) over the last four years!  Typically we would perform halftime with the Marching Cougar Pride, but this year we were able to perform some of our dance routines.  Another exciting thing- two of our seniors made Homecoming Court (Hadley and Ella)!  We are so glad to have them represent us!

One thing that was new for us this year was STATE! We had our first ever KSHSAA Game Day Spirit Showcase (for dance!).  This was a very big deal.  We had a fun time learning new choreography and enjoyed this little bit of normal.  Even though the competition was virtual, we were grateful to be able to film our routine alongside our cheer team.  We were very pleased with how our routine turned out and can’t wait to go compete again next year.

*While we have purchased the rights to perform the music, we do not own it.

After a WONDERFUL football season, we were eager to transition to basketball.  One of the things we really value is giving our students the opportunity to choreograph dances and we were able to do that A LOT this winter! Big shout outs to Jade and Lena for our holiday dance, Meg and Alexis for our pom routine, to Rylie and Summer for helping clean our jazz routine that we learned from K-State, and to our officers (Hadley, Ella, L’leana) for creating our jazz routine! We have some very talented leaders in our midst!

Now that we are done with our basketball games for the year (hopefully we will go to sub-state/state!), we have a few events left on our calendar.  On Monday, February 22nd we will have our All Spirit Night with SMNW Cheer and on Tuesday, March 16th we will host the SMSD Dance Showcase for all the dance teams in the district.  Both events start at 7:00 PM and will be live-streamed so you can watch from the comfort of your home.  We will post those links here when we have them!  In the meantime, we are gearing up for our Spring Special.  This is one thing we have been waiting for since last March when everything got cancelled.  We can’t wait to take you Back in Time with all new dances this May!

If you know someone who is interested in being apart of SMNW Dance Team, tryouts will be held at the end of March.  Follow this website (and our social media) for updates on exact dates or contact Coach Horner (nwhorner@smsd.org) for more details!
